Scoring framework v2

Pure-play score

1 means AM is a small capability inside a large group. 5 means revenue, capital needs and valuation are closely tied to AM.

Bottleneck score

5 now requires scarce alternatives, qualified or serial evidence, high switching costs and a defensible capacity, data or certification advantage. Pilot activity alone cannot score 5.

Evidence maturity

Pilot, Qualified or Serial describes the strongest demonstrated production stage.

Financial materiality

Immaterial, Emerging or Material indicates whether AM can currently influence reported group results.

Substitutability

High, Medium or Low estimates how easily customers can replace the capability without requalification, redesign or major switching cost.

Recalibrated distribution: Bottleneck 5: 9 companies · 4: 26 · 3: 15 · 2: 2. A high score is not an investment recommendation.

Top companies by exposure

Highest thematic purity

Velo3D · Freemelt · Titomic · AML3D · Amaero

Strong bottleneck ownership

Carpenter Technology · Bodycote · GE Aerospace · Nikon · Renishaw

Diversified industrial exposure

Siemens · Dassault Systèmes · Airbus · Boeing · Autodesk

These are research starting points based on thematic purity, bottleneck relevance and industrial positioning—not investment recommendations or a performance ranking.

How to invest in additive manufacturing stocks

Public additive manufacturing exposure is not one uniform category. Investors can approach the sector through pure-play 3D printing stocks, diversified industrial companies, materials and powder suppliers, software platforms, inspection specialists, and aerospace or medical adopters.

Pure-play 3D printing stocks

Pure-play companies typically have the highest revenue sensitivity to additive manufacturing adoption, but they can also carry greater hardware-cycle, financing, customer-concentration and execution risk.

Diversified industrial exposure

Diversified industrial companies may own valuable additive manufacturing systems, software, qualification data or production capabilities, while AM remains a small part of group revenue.

Critical suppliers and bottleneck owners

Materials, powders, post-processing, inspection and software companies may benefit from recurring production demand and qualification barriers even when they are not commonly described as 3D printing stocks.

This directory maps public-market exposure and industrial bottlenecks. It is not investment advice or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security.

Transaction and structure watch

  • L3Harris Technologies: plans a second-half 2026 IPO of Missile Solutions. The $1 billion Department of War convertible preferred investment closed on 23 April 2026. Separately, AE Industrial Partners agreed to acquire a roughly 60% controlling stake in a Space Technology business at an $825 million net enterprise value; L3Harris expects to retain approximately 40%. The disposal group excludes RS-25, so monitor the final allocation of RL10, spacecraft propulsion and AM intellectual property after closing.
  • Titomic: pursuing redomiciliation from Australia to a Delaware parent while retaining ASX trading through CDIs. The proposal includes a one-new-CDI-for-every-25-existing-shares consolidation; monitor the updated timetable, approvals and any future U.S. listing plan.
  • Prodways Group: completed the €35 million sale of its software business and launched a €20 million OPRA at €1.10 per share for up to 35.13% of capital. The offer closes 28 July 2026, results are scheduled for 31 July, and settlement for 4 August. The remaining issuer is smaller, more AM-focused and trades on Euronext Growth Paris as ALPWG.
  • Sandvik Additive Manufacturing: sale to Mimir agreed; closing is expected in Q3 2026, subject to approvals. Reclassify or remove Sandvik as a direct public AM exposure after closing unless retained assets prove material.
  • Nano Dimension: AME and Fabrica transferred to Inspira; Markforged sale to Stratasys agreed for $42.5 million and expected to close in the second half of 2026. On 15 June 2026, Nano Dimension also announced a non-binding term sheet with Infinite Epigenetics to form a publicly traded AI-powered preventive-health and diagnostics company. Re-score after the transactions because the remaining issuer may no longer be primarily an additive-manufacturing exposure.
  • Markforged: treat the exposure as pending until the Stratasys acquisition closes; Nano Dimension will retain the metal binder-jetting product line.
  • Desktop Metal: deconsolidated from Nano Dimension and reported in discontinued operations after the 2025 bankruptcy process.
  • FARO: no longer independently listed; AMETEK completed the acquisition in July 2025.
  • Ansys: no longer independently listed; Synopsys completed the acquisition in July 2025.

Additive manufacturing stocks FAQ

What are the largest public additive manufacturing companies?

The largest public companies with additive manufacturing exposure are generally diversified industrial groups such as GE Aerospace, Siemens, Nikon, Airbus and Boeing. Their AM capabilities can be strategically important even when additive manufacturing is not separately material to group revenue.

Which additive manufacturing stocks are pure plays?

Examples of higher-purity public AM exposure in this directory include 3D Systems, Stratasys, Materialise, Velo3D, Freemelt, Titomic, AML3D and Prodways Group. Pure-play exposure does not imply lower risk or better investment performance.

Which public companies own critical AM bottlenecks?

Critical bottleneck owners can include qualified materials suppliers, post-processing networks, inspection companies, software platforms and serial production adopters. Carpenter Technology, Bodycote, GE Aerospace, ATI, Kennametal, Moog, L3Harris, Align Technology and Dauch Corporation are among the higher-scoring examples in this map.

Are 3D printing stocks the same as additive manufacturing stocks?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but additive manufacturing stocks form a broader category. They can include printer manufacturers as well as powder suppliers, software companies, inspection providers, post-processing specialists and industrial users of AM.

What the directory does not claim

  • A high pure-play score does not mean a better company or investment.
  • A high bottleneck score does not guarantee pricing power or financial materiality.
  • Corporate structures and acquisition outcomes can change.
  • Recurring production evidence matters more than pilot announcements.
