Our earlier 17 October update covered Amaero’s Nasdaq listing approval, Titomic’s restructuring and its Compass Systems order, and Velo3D’s preliminary third-quarter revenue. This note adds two primary-source signals from 15 and 16 October 2026. Both point to the same constraint: qualified material data and repair capacity for U.S. defense hardware.
Qualification funding
Northrop Grumman: leads one of two America Makes MIAMI teams
America Makes and NCDMM have named the winners of the Maturation Initiative for Additive Metals Interchangeability (MIAMI) project call, which is worth $12.4 million in funding. NCDMM published the announcement on 15 October 2026. The work is funded through the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Acquisition & Sustainment (OSW WIRE). Its goal is to show that metal AM materials can reliably replace traditional alloys in Department of War weapon system components. Teams will pick candidate parts, set performance requirements and produce shared, validated data showing that the AM material meets or exceeds the critical properties of the legacy alloy. Northrop Grumman leads one team, with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Contextualize, LLC as partners. Fastech, LLC leads the other team, whose partners include AML3D. The call said three awards were anticipated, but two teams were named. The announcement does not say how the $12.4 million is split between the teams.
Why it matters: the constraint is material qualification data, not printer capacity. Shared interchangeability data could cut the redundant testing that slows each new defense part. This adds to the qualification work on our Northrop Grumman profile. AM remains financially immaterial at Northrop’s scale.
